Exercise Science Consulting delivers science-led performance testing for runners, cyclists, triathletes and endurance athletes, providing personalised physiological insights and precise training zones based on measured data, not estimates.
Every athlete responds differently to training. Our scientific performance assessment measures how your body performs during exercise, providing objective physiological data to understand your current fitness, identify your strengths and limiters, and determine the training intensities that are right for you.
Instead of relying on generic heart-rate zones, age-based formulas or app estimates, we assess how your body responds during exercise using scientifically validated testing methods.
The result is a personalised performance profile, giving you accurate training zones and clear, evidence-based recommendations so you know when to push, when to recover and how to maximise every training session.
Why it matters: Generic training zones are based on population averages. Scientific performance testing provides insights based on your own physiology, allowing you to train with greater precision, monitor your progress objectively and achieve better results with every session.

Most athletes train hard, but without knowing their physiology, they risk working in the wrong zones, wasting sessions, and leaving performance gains on the table.

You’re training consistently, but your times and power output haven’t improved in months.

Progress has flattened, and you’re not sure which training zones will move you forward.

Generic formulas don’t know your body. The wrong zones can waste weeks of training.

High volume without clear intensity control leads to fatigue, inconsistency, and stalled progress.
The ESC Performance Assessment maps how your body responds to increasing effort, helping identify the exact training zones you should be working in not generic zones based on averages.

You complete a structured bike or treadmill test with intensity increasing in stages.

Heart rate, power, pace and where applicable blood lactate are measured at each stage.

We identify your key training thresholds and where your body starts accumulating lactate.

You leave with clear zones you can use to train smarter and improve performance.

Here’s exactly what separates formula-based training zones from zones built around your actual physiology.

Location

Testing takes place at our dedicated performance facility. Full address, parking, and travel details are confirmed after booking.

Allow 60–90 minutes for the full assessment, including warm-up, testing, and an initial results overview.

Wear normal training kit and bring your usual running or cycling shoes. Avoid heavy meals for 2–3 hours beforehand and arrive well hydrated.

Testing is available on a calibrated bike ergometer or treadmill, depending on your sport and training goals.

Your written report is delivered within 48 hours. A debrief with Andy can then be booked to walk through your results, zones, and how to apply them.

Most athletes are surprised by what the data reveals — and how quickly it changes the way they train.

Many athletes discover they’ve been training too hard on easy days, or too easy when it matters.

The test often shows where endurance is being limited and what needs to change.

Some athletes find they can safely train harder in specific zones than they realised.

The data often reveals patterns behind fatigue, plateaus, and inconsistent performance.
Discover how runners, cyclists and endurance athletes are using science-led testing to train with greater precision and confidence.
The ESC Performance Assessment is a complete, standalone service. Most athletes walk away
with everything they need to transform their training immediately and that's absolutely fine.
For those who want ongoing support to apply the data over time, adapt their zones as they improve
and have direct access to ESC as their physiology evolves, the Premium
Performance Package is there when you need it.

Everything you need to know before booking your assessment.
The full assessment typically takes 60–90 minutes, including warm-up, testing, and an initial discussion of your results. You’ll receive your written report within 48 hours, with a separate debrief session booked at a time that suits you.
Yes. The test is adapted to your current fitness, sport, and training background. You don’t need to be an elite athlete — you just need to be training with a goal and want clearer data to guide your progress.
The blood sample is very small — just a quick fingertip prick at regular stages during the test. Most athletes describe it as a mild pinch. The test itself is controlled and adapted to your current fitness level.
Absolutely. Your zones and thresholds are delivered in a format that's compatible with most training apps and platforms (Garmin, Wahoo, TrainingPeaks, and others). Your debrief session will cover how to integrate your new zones into whatever approach you're currently using — or help you structure something new if that's needed.
Most athletes benefit from retesting every 8–16 weeks during a training cycle. As your fitness improves, your lactate thresholds shift — meaning your zones need to be updated to remain accurate. If you're on our Premium Support Package, re-testing is included monthly so your data always reflects your current physiology.
The standard assessment includes a one-time expert debrief session. For ongoing coaching, structured training plans, monthly retesting, and direct access to your exercise scientist, our Premium Performance Package (£90/month) is the best option. You can enquire about it on this page or ask at the time of your assessment.
Please get in touch via the contact details below or through the booking form and we'll confirm your nearest available facility location and appointment availability. All testing is conducted in a professional, fully equipped performance lab environment.
Book your ESC Performance Assessment and get personalised training zones based on your body, your data, and your performance goals.
